Two women are currently cooling their heels at the Abia State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for alleged child trafficking.
One of the suspects is the mother of the baby and an auxiliary nurse in one of the hospitals in the state. It was learnt that a 20-year-old Miss Joy Titus
Gabriel from Akwa Ibom, who was pregnant for a yet-to-be-identified man, had last week, given birth to a baby girl.
It was gathered that Miss Gabriel connived with another 20-year-old Joy Obiekwe from Anambra State, said to be an auxiliary nurse, who took care of the former during her period of pregnancy till time of delivery, and sold the baby for N160, 000.
Findings revealed that the mother, Miss Gabriel received N60, 000 while her co partner-in-crime, Miss Obiekwe took N100, 000 an amount she said was to offset the expense she incurred during Gabriel’s pregnancy.
They both met waterloo when on June 6, following a tip off, police from the Ndiegoro division, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Usman
Abdulrahman raided a building on Nkodi Road where the mother of the baby and the auxiliary nurse were arrested.
An insider said while police had spread its drag net to get the baby girl’s buyer now at large, he disclosed that the two suspects had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Umuahia for further interrogation and possible prosecution.
