Man imprisoned for 5 years for setting pregnant lover on fire

On Monday, a 37-year-old bar operator who was identified as Lucky Esonahae was arraigned on one count bordering on causing bodily harm by setting his pregnant lover on fire. The prosecuting officer, Sergeant Ganiyu Yahya, told the court that the incident took place at Uwelu Quartres in Benin, and was reported by the victim, Stella Isaac, on July 6, the same day it occurred. Yahya said Esonahae poured kerosene on Stella, who was said to be 7 months pregnant, lit a match and set her on fire. He said that the victim was later rescued by one of her sons and her neighbours, who forced the door of her room open, as she had been locked in. He said the victim, who was later rushed to the Central Hospital, where she received treatment sustained burns on her hands and forehead. The police prosecutor also told the court that Esonahae had earlier accused the pregnant woman of infidelity for allegedly returning at about 6pm from her ante-natal care and had threatened to kill her, before she ran

Appointments snub: Ohaneze tells Ndigbo to calm down

Secretary General of apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Joe Nwaorgu, has called on his kinsmen to remain calm despite their snub by the current administration. Masquerades invade church, flog pastors, worshipers

A Church service was reportedly disrupted by four masquerades who flogged the pastors and the worshipers in Epinmi Akoko area of Ondo state. One of the masquerades, Tunde Arohunmolase was however arrested while others fled after flogging the pastors and the worshipers. Police source said that the masquerades invade the Christ Apostolic Church in the town while the service was on-going and abruptly ended it. Two of the Pastors were reportedly injured by the time the masquerades left the church premises. Vanguard learnt that when the masquerades arrived the church premises they were challenged by some of the church workers. But they reportedly ‎overpowered them and went straight for their target. While other worshipers fled leaving the Pastors , their attackers reportedly had a field day dealing with them. The National Universities Commission has published in the NUC’s weekly bulletin dated August 24, a list of illegal universities operating in Nigeria. Abuja – President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Mr Babachir David Lawal as the new Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) In a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, said the president also appointed Alhaji Abba Kyari as his Chief of Staff ; retired Col. Hameed Ali as Comptroller-General, Nigerian Customs Service, while Mr Kure Abeshi is the new Comptroller-General, Nigerian Immigration Service. It stated that the president also appointed Sen. Ita S. Enang as Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate) while Hon. Suleiman A. FBI donates forensic equipment to EFCC to combat cyber crimes

The American Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, has donated a forensic work station to the Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to assist it in fighting graft. The equipment, technically referred to as Forensic Recovery of Evidence Device, FRED, was presented to the Head of Operations, Lagos Zonal office of the EFCC, Iliyasu Kwarbai, by the United State acting Consul General, Dehab Ghereab. According to Ghereab, the equipment will enhance the EFCC’s effort in the fight against cyber crime and standardize its operations. Ghereab said: “As we engage in these practices, we needed our counterparts, so the FBI office made an assessment of the prevailing cases of cyber-based crimes which are not unique to Nigeria.” In the views of Fritz Kennely, a technical personnel with the FBI, the device will help the EFCC in analyzing, processing and preserving digital evidence which can be presented in court in a clear, concise and understandable manner, thereby aiding judges to adjudi

Lafia – The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) on Tuesday appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to consider their members for cabinet appointment. A committee has been set up by the Federal Government saddled with the responsibility of recovering government property from former government officials. Yesterday, Morgan Freeman's 33 year old daughter E'Dena Hines, was stabbed to death on a New York street near her home. Deputy Governor of Borno state, Zannah Mustapha dies in Yola

The deputy governor of Borno State, Zannah Mustapha died in Yola, Adamawa state this morning during an official trip to the state. Mustapha, who had gone to Yola yesterday to attend the convocation ceremony at Moddibo Adama University, retired to his room last night and failed to wake up this morning. He'd died in his sleep at a government guest house in the state capital. He was found unresponsive around 8am after his aides entered his room when they noticed he hadn't woken up for early morning prayers. He is believed to have died of cardiac arrest. According to a statement signed by Bristow’s Regional Director Africa, Duncan Moore, ​Captain Wyatt, joined the company in 2006 and has spent his entire career flying with Bristow Helicopters out of Africa. PDP Rivers state chapter has petitioned EFCC over claims that the immediate past governor of the state, Rotimi Amechi engaged in corrupt practices while he served as governor.
