Rwandan ex-minister jailed for life over genocide

The U.N. war crimes tribunal for Rwanda sentenced former minister Callixte Nzabonimana to life in prison on Thursday after he was found guilty of playing a key role in his country’s 1994 genocide. The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), based in Arusha in Tanzania, convicted the former Rwandan Minister of Youth and Associate Movements for genocide, conspiracy, incitement and extermination as a crime against humanity. “The trial chamber found that … Nzabonimana instigated the killing of Tutsis. It also found Nzabonimana guilty of entering into two separate agreements to kill Tutsis,” ICTR said in a statement. The former Rwandan politician, 59, was arrested in Tanzania in February 2008. Ethnic Hutu militia and soldiers butchered 800,000 minority Tutsis and politically moderate Hutus in the tiny east African country in just 100 days between April and June 1994.

Judges sentence Charles Taylor to 50 years imprisonment

Judges at an international war crimes court have sentenced former Liberian President Charles Taylor to 50 years in prison following his landmark conviction for supporting rebels in Sierra Leone who murdered thousands during their country’s brutal civil war in return for blood diamonds. The Special Court for Sierra Leone found Taylor guilty last month on 11 charges of aiding and abetting the rebels who went on a bloody rampage during the decade-long war that ended in 2002 with more than 50,000 dead. Presiding Judge Richard Lussick says the crimes Taylor was convicted of were of the “utmost gravity in terms of scale and brutality.” The 64-year-old warlord-turned-president is the first former head of state convicted by an international war crimes court since World War II.

Son drags 96-yr-old father to court over plans to re-marry

Umuahia—A United States-based Nigerian, Emeka Mazie, yesterday dragged his 96-year-old father to court for insisting to re-marry after the demise of his wife eight years ago. The suit with number HU/54/2012 filed before the Umuahia High Court 4, is presided over by Justice Agwu Kalu. Counsel to the defendant, Miss Ebere Orji, told the court that her client, Chief Israel Mazie, and father of Emeka, had contracted a marriage with Ebere Ndubuka under the Marriage Act. She noted that his children from the late wife (Emeka’s mother)  had continued to obstruct the marriage, pointing out that his client was hale and hearty and entered the marriage with his whole mind. She maintained that the plaintiff and only son of Israel with his sisters was duly informed before the marriage was contracted but regretted that they made a u-turn to stop the union. Counsel to the Plaintiff, Mrs Ann Uchendu, told the court that Israel and Ndubuka had yet to consummate their marriage traditionally.

Jonathan’s UNILAG Name Change a Gift Horse' - Prof Wole Soyinka

His statement below... This is one gift horse which, contrary to traditional saying, must be inspected thoroughly in the mouth. Primary from all of us must be a plea to the MKO Abiola family not to misconstrue the protests against the naming of the University of Lagos after their heroic patriarch. Issues must be separated and understood in their appropriate contexts. The family will acknowledge that, among the loudest opposing voices to Jonathan’s gift horse, are those who have clamoured tirelessly that MKO Abiola, the Nigerian nation’s president-elect, be honoured nationally, and in a befitting manner. Next is my confession to considerable shock that President Goodluck Jonathan did not even think it fit to consult or inform the administrators of the university, including Council and Senate, of his intention to re-name their university for any reason, however laudable. This arbitrariness, this act of disrespect, was a barely tolerated aberration of military governance. It is

Court sacks House of Rep. member over party defection

A Federal High Court sitting in Akure has sacked a member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Ifedayo Abegunde representing Akure North/Akure South Federal Constituency,  for defecting from the party from which he was elected. Abegunde was elected into the House of Representative on the platform of the Labour Party (LP) during  the April 2011 general elections, but defected to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) after a few months. He had approached the court for judicial protection against his recall by the Ondo State House of Assembly and the Labour Party. Joined in the suit are the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Abegunde’ s counsel, Chief Adekola Olawoye had argued that by the provisions of Section 68(1) (G)) of the 1999 Constitution and the imbroglio, division and factionalization in LP, he is entitled to dump the party. The defence counsel led by the Attorney General and Commiss

FUNKE AKINDELE – “I KNOW MY WEDDING IS A BIG SURPRISE”

It was an all Nollywood affair on Saturday May 26, 2012, as one of Nigeria’s movie favourites Olufunke Ayotunde Akindele tied the knot with her beau Kehinde Adeola Oloyede popularly called Kenny Almaroof in a three-part wedding combo. The build-up was massive, and the wedding touted as the next big Nollywood wedding – after Mercy Johnson‘s lavish August 27, 2011 nuptials. And after a private Nikkai ceremony two days earlier, on May 24, the couple were determined to make up by having a grand ball. The wedding ceremony took place at The Haven event centre as opposed to what had been announced earlier. Guests and well-wishers had made their way to the publicised venue: All Seasons Plaza, Ikeja, only to meet a shut gate. Those lucky enough to find out the new venue then made their way towards The Haven in GRA, Ikeja. We’re told the announcement of All Seasons was a decoy to prevent media and public intrusion although the bride’s reps say they changed venues to accommodate crowd

News: Prezzo's Done With Goldie!

Prezzo has had it with Goldie as it transpired just past midnight. The Kenyan Housemate and Nigerian lass have been an item since the beginning of StarGame and though they have had their fair share of fights, they managed to work them out. However, of late Prezzo hasn't really had much time for Goldie, who is the current Head of House in Upville. Things are just not the same between the two of them and if Zainab's plans of coming between the two are anything to go by, then she may just win this one hands down. Earlier in the day,  Zainab was flirting with Prezzo and he seemed to like it too. During the midnight chat, Prezzo told DKB that he had solved too many of Goldie's issues and he was not prepared to do it anymore. "I wash my hands," Prezzo said which led to DKB sharing a Ghanaian idiom with him; "A man comes to do his work but not everything."  Don't you wonder how Goldie will cope without Prezzo especially because she already told Big Brot
