JUNE 12: Family wants Jonathan to declare Abiola ex-President

Family of the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 Presidential election, the late Chief Moshood Abiola, yesterday, urged the federal government to declare him an ex- president of Nigeria.

Head of Abiola family and a younger brother to the late politician, Alhaji Mubashiru Abiola, stated this at their family house in Abeokuta when some officials of Ogun State Government led by Governor Ibikunle Amosun and a campaign train of civil society groups visited them as part of activities marking the 19^th anniversary of the annulment of the election.

He said: “The renaming of University of Lagos after MKO is not enough as a winner of the election, he deserves more than that considering his contribution for the democracy to thrive in Nigeria.

“The family members have been living in penury since the demise of our bread winner, the Federal Government has never extended any hand of assistance to us since then except the Ogun state Government”.

Addressing the family members of the late politician, Governor Ibikunle Amosun said Abiola was the man who represented all that is being enjoyed today as democracy, stressing that Abiola laid down his life for peace and tranquility in Nigeria.

Also, the National President of the Campaign for Democracy, Mrs. Joe Okei-Odumakin, has advocated a post-humous declaration of Abiola as an ex-president of Nigeria.

One of the most iconic captains of the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, and former coach of the team, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, is dead, his family has announced. He was 54.
