6 Foods That Lower Blood Pressure

1. Bananas

Banana is very rich in potassium, and is considered the nature's most powerful blood-pressure-lowering medicine.

Many scientific studies have shown that a shortage of potassium plays a major role in the onset of high blood pressure. It is also suggested that restricting potassium intake can cause a blood pressure spike even among people with no previous concerns. A low potassium intake also raises your odds of suffering a stroke.

2. Garlic

A daily dose of garlic is good for everyone. As reported by Daily Express newspaper UK, people with high blood pressure who took garlic supplements daily for up to five months had a significant drop in their blood pressure levels. In some cases, the drop was as much as that seen in patients taking drugs such as beta blockers and ACE inhibitors.

3. Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is considered a powerful blood pressure lowering agent. What gives dark chocolate its protective benefits against heart and vascular diseases is the bioactive phytochemicals called polyphenols.

Flavonoids, a subclass of polyphenols that accounts for about two-thirds of our polyphenol intake, are found in high concentration in dark chocolate, as well as in fruits and vegetables.

4. Watermelon

As reported in naturalnews.com, food scientists from the Florida State University established that consuming 6 grams of L-citrulline contained in watermelon extract for a period of six weeks helped normalize the blood pressure of participants in the study who were previously observed to have raised blood pressure.

5. Avocado

Avocado is very rich in potassium, and other blood-pressure-lowering nutrients. It also delivers a variety of other heart-healthy vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and monounsaturated fat.

6. Red Wine

Red wine is considered a heart healthy drink which can be used in preventing the onset of high blood pressure and even addressing existing hypertension.

The key substance believed to lower blood pressure is polyphenols, including resveratrol and procyanidins.
