The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Abuja, on Monday said a patient suspected to have Ebola-like symptoms died on Friday, August 29, 2014, at the Family Medicine Unit of Asokoro District Hospital, Abuja.
This was contained in a statement issued by the the Head, Public Relations Unit, Health and Human Services Secretariat (HHSS) of FCTA, Mr. Badaru Yakassai, a copy obtained by ThisDay.
Yakassai, who revealed that the patient died days before his test result could be ascertained, further explained that the deceased was admitted at the accident and emergency unit of the said hospital on August 28, 2014 and was immediately isolated.
He assured that strict infection control measures were quickly put in place as the patient was suspected to have contracted Ebola virus. He said his blood was taken to the designated FCT Ebola testing laboratory in the hospital premises.
According to him, the epidemiology unit of Public Health Department of the HHSS was notified, while the test result was expected to be out on Monday, September 1, 2014. He said the case which also served as a drill to test the preparedness of the hospital in managing the possible outbreak and containment of the disease.
Yakassai disclosed that the clinical assessment of the deceased did not show any history of contact or travel, but due to the high index of suspicion, isolation and strict infection control measures were continued and the unit was cordoned off.
He said the accident and emergency unit was temporarily relocated to the general outpatient unit (GOPD).
“A list of all medical staff who had come in contact with the patient had been compiled and are all under surveillance” Yakassai said. “The general public is advised not to panic, as a case of Ebola has not been confirmed at the hospital and the measures that have been put in place are only precautionary and in the interest of public safety.”
He assured that there was no confirmed case of Ebola in the FCTA, apart from the suspect.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu on Monday September 1, 2014, while giving an update on the Ebola situation in Portharcourt, refuted the rumour of the outbreak of the deadly disease in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, noting that the man who died of the Ebola-like symptoms was a sickle cell patient.
