Marvin Gaye was a singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist who grew from gospel routes to create his own innovative blend of pop, blues and soul; exploring lyrical themes of social struggle, faith and sexuality. His music laid the foundations for modern R&B and, 30 years after his death, his influence can still be heard.
Gaye was shot dead by his father on 1 April 1984, one day before his 45th birthday, in one of the most shocking fatal occurences in music history.
From Justin Timberlake to John Legend to Robin Thicke, they all owe a debt to Marvin.
