A mountain bike rider made a miraculous escape after a horrifying crash while trying to jump over a canyon.
Cam Zink, a BMX star who was defending his title in the Red Bull Rampage event on Sunday, was going great guns in the early part of his run as he flew up and down the craggy landscape of Zion National Park in Utah.
But then he came to the most notorious part of the course: a vertiginous descent down a mountainside onto a tiny ramp jutting out into thin air leading the way across an 80ft gap with a yawning chasm below, with only the rider's nerves standing between him and doom.
Most of the riders made it over in one piece, yet Zink was not so fortunate: as he flew through the air he realised that he was overbalancing, and desperately threw his bike aside.
That decision left him flying through the air waiting for the impact of landing on the rocky course - and when it came, it looked bone-shattering.
Yet the man himself was completely unbothered: he escaped with bruised heels, and posted the footage from his helmet camera onto his Facebook page under the title 'So you wanna see something gnarly?'
Despite that cool title, the man himself admits he was terrified when the accident was taking place.
"I was scared for my life and can't believe my legs and knees are intact," he wrote. "With five knee surgeries, two broken feet and a having a rod in my tibia prior to this crash I guess I'm doin ok if this 80 foot bail to flat only bruised my heels."
Zink's appreciative audience agreed, with his post being greeted by hundreds of comments such as "Respect!", "Nice work!", "You're a tank!", and World of Sport's favourite, "Balls the size of coconuts!". Though we imagine if that last one were true Zink would have all sorts of trouble riding a bicycle.
