DELTA
STATE: DSC Expressway in the Udu axis is
currently receiving a facelift in readiness to the takeoff of the new resort at
Aladja. It is believed that on completion of the resort, much traffic in human
and vehicular is envisaged. To this end, adjoining Streets to the said
expressway need not to be overlooked as this could pose adverse effects to the
good intentions of the government and the proprietors of the said resort.
Oghenevwere Payah Street is one of such streets,
adjacent to Ovwian Grammar School, Udu Road. The street abuts unto DSC
Expressway opposite Betty More Hotels, approaching from Otu-Jeremi axis or the
Delta State Deputy Governor’s house. At
peak period and weekends, this Udu Road express junction is always affected
with heavy hold-ups. At this point, the
use of Oghenevwere Payah Street to cut-off the said hold-ups in traffic cannot
be overemphasized.
Oghenevwere
Payah Street road contract was awarded and work completed and approved leaving
a portion of not more than 300 meters un-tarred. The road now is completely
cut-off from the Ovwian Grammar School axis. Till this moment, we could not
ascertain the reason behind this negligence but an unconfirmed report has it
that the man who linked the road project decided to stop at that point to ward
off criminals from operating from that axis. The question is, can an un-tarred
road ward off criminals from operating if they want to? Some respondents the
writer spoke to believed there is more to it than meet the eye. The residents of this area cannot drive their vehicles into their individual houses any longer as a result of this bad spots. A resident who craved anonymity appealed to the State Government to come to their plight.
