With the shadow of the face-off between the presidency and the House of Representatives over the implementation of constituency projects, a member of the House forges ahead to showcase her own constituency empowerment projects.
PROMISE keeping is said not to be a virtue of many politicianss. So it was a surprise for many in Anambra State when recently, Rep. Uche Ekwunife gathered friends, associates and political supporters to say thank you to her constituents for re-electing her to the House of Representatives.
“This gathering is not only to say thank you for returning me to the National Assembly, but also to fulfill a promise I made to God before the rerun election that I will publicly appreciate God’s favour to me,” Mrs. Ekwunife the member representing Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia federal constituency told the gathering that day.
Among those at the gathering were Governor Peter Obi, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, former Senator Annie Okonkwo, national chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, and a couple of the celebrant’s colleagues in the House of Representatives, including Victor Ogene, Ogbuefi Ozomgbachi, Cyril Egwuatu Akpan Umor, Peace Nnaji, Ofochukwu Egbo, among others were there to support their colleague.
Umeh, in particular, was outstanding in his praise of the legislator saying that the selection of Ekwunife as the party’s candidate had shown that it is always good for political parties to identify people who would give the people adequate representation, adding that APGA was proud of her.
Effective representation
The federal lawmaker, who said she used her first tenure between 2007 and 2011 to learn and master the ropes of effective representation at the National Assembly, promised that she would continue to meet their aspirations by offering them quality representation.
The federal lawmaker, who said she used her first tenure between 2007 and 2011 to learn and master the ropes of effective representation at the National Assembly, promised that she would continue to meet their aspirations by offering them quality representation.
She recalled that every community in the constituency had benefited from her representation through one project or another in the past. Among the packages given out by her were computer centers, a library, ICT centre, solar street lights, classroom blocks, healthcare centers, roads, rural electrification and erosion control projects. On that occasion she promised to do more.
Governor Obi who also attended the ceremony commended Ekwunife for remembering those who worked for her and urged other lawmakers to emulate her. The opportunity was one for Ekwunife to distribute gifts to supporters and other constituents.
The star handouts were six cars to six supporters of Ekwunife. The lucky beneficiaries of the cars were 40 year -old Mrs. Nkoli Muoghalu from Nri in Anaocha local government area, 25 year old Ify Onyekaonwu from Agulu in Anaocha local government area, Amaka Onyika from Dunukofia local government area and 40 year -old Ngozi Njelita from Umunnachi also from Dunukofia.
The other two cars had earlier been given out by the lawmaker. The significant thing was that those who received the car gifts did not even know they were the chosen until the lawmaker herself began to call out the names. According to her, it was in appreciation of their genuine support for her even when hope was almost lost.
Many others also benefited including 153 widows who each went home with electric fans, bags of rice, wrappers and N5000. A faith-based secondary school, St Loretta Girls’ Special Science School, Adazi, received N4 million for the renovation of dilapidated buildings in the school.
Other items distributed at the ceremony include 10,000 standing fans, 10,000 bags of rice, one million cartons of noodles and 5,000 umbrellas, 30,000 pieces of wrapper, 200,000 treated mosquito nets and 300,000 exercise books.
