Concern ... Rihanna talks to Oprah about assault
POP star Rihanna wept in a TV interview as she lifted the lid on being battered by her ex.
The Umbrella star, 24, revealed she felt “angry, hurt and betrayed” after R&B singer Chris Brown beat her up on the eve of the Grammy Awards in February 2009 — but also wanted to help him.
She told US chat queen Oprah Winfrey, in the rare emotional TV interview to air this Sunday: “It happened. It happened to me. And it happened to me in front of the world.
"It was embarrassing, it was humiliating. It was hurtful, and you know, it's not easy."
She added: “I lost my best friend - like, everything I knew switched in a night, and I couldn't control that.
"It was a weird confusing space to be in because as angry as I was, as angry and hurt and betrayed, I just felt like he made that mistake because he needed help and who's going to help him?
"So, I had to deal with that and that's not easy for me to understand, interpret and it's not easy to interpret on camera, not with the world watching."
She continued emotionally: "So it was hard for me to even pay attention to my mind and figuring things out because now it became a circus and I felt protective - like I felt like the only person they hate right now is him.
“Everybody’s going to say he’s a monster, without looking at the source. And I was more concerned about him.”
Brown, who was 19 at the time of the assault, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years probation, community service and domestic violence counseling.
Rihanna and Brown have since collaborated on her track Birthday Cake.

Oprah, who interviewed the star at her home in Barbados, said her preconception of Rihanna before meeting her couldn't have been more wrong.
She said: "I thought she was going to be kind of a badass, kind of a hard-edged rocker, pop woman.
"Nothing could have been further from the truth."
