THE campaign group for ex-Head of State, Maj.-Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) has said that no fewer than five million supporters would converge on Abuja on Wednesday to witness Buhari’s declaration of bid for the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress.
The National Secretary of the Buhari Support Group Centre, Ibrahim Dauda, said this at a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday.
He said that arrangements were in top gear to receive the Buhari’s supporters in the nation’s capital to witness the declaration of his bid for the APC ticket.
Buhari, who was the presidential candidate of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change in the 2011 elections, is one of the national leaders of the APC, which came into being from the merger of the CPC with other opposition parties.
The others in the merger were the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, All Nigeria Progressives Party and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
Dauda said Buhari would be responding to the clarion call by well-meaning Nigerians to rescue the nation from the catastrophe imposed on it by the failure of leadership.
He said, “The occasion is to mark General Buhari’s official declaration of intent to contest for the Presidency in 2015. It is slated for Wednesday, October 15 2014 at the famous Eagle Square Abuja.
“As the frontline political organisation that has been inaugurated and mandated by Buhari himself to be responsible for harmonising and coordinating all the political support groups, among other salient functions, we can say affirmatively that the formal declaration of General Buhari this week will witness the unprecedented attendance of not less than five million passionate supporters of the General.”
He said indiscipline, corruption, impunity and incompetent leadership were threatening the country’s existence.
Dauda explained that the BSGC was committed to the task of convincing members of the APC that Buhari remained the party’s best candidate if it truly desires to wrestle the leadership from the Peoples Democratic Party come 2015.
“General Buhari is the only APC presidential candidate that actually has the political clout, charisma and pedigree to give the PDP a good run for its money,” he said.
The group said Buhari’s consistent record of being the first runner-up in the last three presidential elections put him in the best position to clinch the job.
Dauda said the fact that the retired General garnered 12 million votes on the platform of the CPC was proof of his mass appeal.
He noted that in the previous elections Buhari did not enjoy the majority support in highly populated states like Lagos and Rivers, where the APC is now in power.
The group also debunked insinuations that Buhari was a religious bigot who has an agenda to Islamise Nigeria.
