Facts have emerged on how Senate president, Bukola Saraki yesterday, pleaded with the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) to adjourn his case indefinitely.
The former Kwara state is facing a 13-count charge bordering on false assets declaration, to which he has pleaded ‘not guilty’, but the hearing has since continued at the tribunal.
The senator was accompanied by about 84 of his colleagues to the tribunal on Wednesday, October 21, as the hearing was resumed and the case was further adjourned till November 5, pending the outcome of the Court of Appeal.
But, the adjournment did not take place before Saraki pleaded with the tribunal to adjourn the case indefinitely, a plea which he did not succeed with.
According to Vanguard, Justice Danladi Umar-led tribunal refused the application Mahmud Magaji (SAN), the legal counsel to the embattled former governor.
It was also reported that Saraki initially refused to enter the dock during the trial because a higher court is already seized with the res of the case against him.
This however changed when an application by Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), the prosecuting counsel compelled him to enter the dock.
“My Lords, when a matter is called where arraignment has taken place, the first thing is for the accused person to go into the dock. I, therefore, apply that the accused be directed to move into the dock,” he said.
After all the drama at the tribunal, Saraki will resume at the plenary today to continue with the ministerial nominees screening as all eyes will be on the outcome of the screening of Rotimi Amaechi, the immediate past Rivers state governor, who can be approved without screening.
