“It's in your hands to make the world a better place.” Those were the words of activist and former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, when he retired from politics at age 90. In the same speech, he called on the rich to help the poor.
The UN recognises July 18 of every year as Nelson Mandela International Day, created to honour his legacy by promoting community service.
This year also marks his 94th birthday, and individuals, communities and organisations have been asked to donate 67 minutes to doing something for the society, in commemoration of the 67 years Mandela gave to the struggle against apartheid.
On Tuesday, the eve of his birthday, former president of the United States, Bill Clinton, and his daughter Chelsea visited him. The pair, along with Mandela’s wife, Machel planted trees as part of their good deed for the day.
All over the world, good deeds are being done as part of the tradition. The housing charity, Habitat for Humanity is working in South Africa with volunteers to build 67 homes.
