The Daily Star reports that a Ugandan maid, who was caught abusing and stepping on a child in a hidden video, has pled guilty to torturing the then 18-month-old child, Arnella.
An apologetic Jolly Tumuhiirwe is said to have appeared in court without a lawyer and asked Arnella’s parents and the nation for forgiveness of her actions. She faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted on torture charges.
In November, Jolly Tumuhiirwe was caught in a hidden camera at baby Arnella’s parent’s home being force-fed, thrown to the floor and stepped on and dragged across the floor. The video which was installed by baby Arnella’s father was then shared across social media receiving over hundreds of thousands of views.
Baby Arnella’s case has been keenly followed by media in many countries and has brought attention to the issue of a largely unsupervised and growing domestic labor force in urban cities.
Jolly Tumuhiirwe is awaiting her fate and will be sentenced in court on Wednesday.
