Abuja - Lawmakers of the National Assembly and other staff members in the premises vacated their respective offices as information surfaced about explosive materials planted inside the building.
At about 2 p.m., some lawmakers and bank staff were alerted by a strange movement by suspicious persons at the National Assembly.
The tension and suspicions were heightened as security operatives were drafted to the major entrances of the sprawling complex. Furthermore, officers locked up the offices to avert any possible attack or threat.
These movements prompted the workers to vacate their working places and get out of the complex.
Acting Serjeant-at-Arms of the National Assembly Ibrahim Ndako, however, denied there was a bomb scare in the complex and attributed the workers' panic to rumous.
It would be recalled that police and security agencies have been on alert since yesterday's powerful explosion that occurred at the crowded Nyanya bus station in Abuja. According to police reports, some 80 people were killed, while hundreds sustained injuries. However, eyewitnesses accounts suggest there were about 500 bodies at the scene of the accident.
The National Assembly is located in the Three Arms Zone, the high-security area in Abuja where the office of Supreme Court, as well as several federal buildings are also situated. The Zone is not far away from the scene of the Monday's bombing.
