In what is seen as the growing political influence of Vice President Namadi Sambo as the political godfather of the new Kaduna State governor, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, Nuhu Bajoga is likely to become the State’s Deputy Governor, SaharaReporters has learned.
Bajoga, the chairman of the Kaduna State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is a former Nigeria Ambassador to Poland.
Despite claims early this week by VP Sambo in which he distanced himself from the hustle for the office of the Deputy Governor in the state, it has been confirmed that he has been indirectly controlling the 44-year-old governor. The Vice-President owns Nalado Nigeria Limited in Kaduna, where Yero was accountant for 10 years.
Another credible source within Kaduna PDP told SaharaReporters confidentially that Bajoga has personally confirmed that some people close to the Vice President intimated him of the decision three days after Governor Patrick Yakowa’s death, and that he has resolved to accept the offer.
It was further gathered that following the burial of Governor Yakowa in his home town of Fadan Kagoma on Thursday, the new governor travelled to Abuja where he met Sambo. There, they finally sealed the deal, and the new governor, upon returning to Kaduna on Friday, started to comply with Sambo’s directives.
Sambo himself arrived Kaduna on Friday evening. Hours later, on Saturday morning, he was present at the PDP State Caucus meeting which was called to officially announce Yero as the new leader of the party in the state.
At the meeting, Bajoga reportedly delivered a speech in which he pledged unflinching loyalty to Yero to justify his new status as the next Deputy Governor.
Bajoga, who hails from Southern Kaduna is from the same local government as the widow of late governor, Mrs. Amina Yakowa.
Bajoga is reportedly under pressure by Southern Kaduna caucus members to reject the offer on the ground that there are more qualified persons. But doing so will have serious political consequence, which is why he is set to accept the nomination. An announcement in that regard is expected early next week.
