Memorial Day Outlook: Warmer Air to Arrive in Mid-Atlantic, Northeast

After a cool, dry start to the holiday weekend across the Northeast, warmer weather will greet most Memorial Day cookouts and activities. High temperatures on Memorial Day will be near or above 80 degrees Fahrenheit from New York City to Washington, D.C. The humidity will start to become more noticeable as well, mainly from Philadelphia to the nation's capital. Even with warmer air moving in for the holiday, it will not be as warm or as humid as it has been in recent warm spells. On the flip side, temperatures are expected to stay closer to 70 F around Boston, where the warmer air mass has not quite arrived yet. Humidity levels will remain low across much of New England in this cooler air. The chilly water just off the coast will also help keep many New England beaches from Maine to Cape Cod in the 60s on Memorial Day. Even though water temperatures at the Jersey Shore and Delaware beaches are still only in the 50s and 60s, it should be a nice day to be on the beach as aftern...

U.S. charges 6 Chinese nationals with economic espionage

WASHINGTON - The U.S government charged six Chinese nationals with economic espionage, saying they stole secrets from two companies that develop technology often used in military systems, the Department of Justice said on Tuesday. It was the third time in as many years that U.S. authorities have made accusations of economic espionage on behalf of China, a sign that the United States is increasingly focused on what it has termed a top national security concern. One of the suspects, Professor Hao Zhang, 36, was arrested on Saturday in Los Angeles after he arrived on a flight from China, the Justice Department said in a statement. The other five suspects are believed to be in China. Zhang and two other professors from Tianjin University were charged with stealing source code and other proprietary information from chipmakers Avago Technologies Ltd and Skyworks Solutions Inc, where two of them worked. Avago has headquarters in San Jose, California and Singapore, and Skyworks is based i...

According to the source, the APC lawmakers approached the former president, through an ex minister of Ekiti state, to help them dislodge the security agents who have laid siege to the Ekiti assembly complex so as to pave way for their return to the building. “A former minister from Ekiti State sent a senator to a former president. When he met him, the former president asked the 19 lawmakers to see him and they went. A top security per...

Boko Haram Militants Raped Hundreds of Female Captives in Nigeria

DALORI, Nigeria — Hundreds of women and girls captured by Boko Haram have been raped, many repeatedly, in what officials and relief workers describe as a deliberate strategy to dominate rural residents and possibly even create a new generation of Islamist militants in Nigeria. In interviews, the women described being locked in houses by the dozen, at the beck and call of fighters who forced them to have sex, sometimes with the specific goal of impregnating them. “They married me,” said Hamsatu, 25, a young woman in a black-and-purple head scarf, looking down at the ground. She said she was four months pregnant, that the father was a Boko Haram member and that she had been forced to have sex with other militants who took control of her town. “They chose the ones they wanted to marry,” added Hamsatu, whose full name was not used to protect her identity. “If anybody shouts, they said they would shoot them.” Boko Haram, a radical Islamist sect that has taken over large stretches of te...

Extreme athlete Dean Potter knew dangers of BASE jumping

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Extreme athlete Dean Potter knew the risks every time he flew off a cliff with a parachute. He lost a friend to a BASE jumping accident last year and spoke about the death-defying nature of the sport at that friend's memorial service. "He always recognized how dangerous the sport was and at the same time, how magical it was -- the tension between those two things," fellow climber Chris McNamara said. Potter, renowned for his daring and sometimes rogue climbs and BASE jumps, was one of two men killed after jumping from a 7,500-foot promontory in Yosemite National Park. Someone called for help late Saturday after losing contact with Potter, 43, and his climbing partner, Graham Hunt, 29. Park ranger Scott Gediman said rescuers looked for the men overnight but couldn't find them. On Sunday morning, a helicopter crew spotted their bodies in Yosemite Valley. The men wore wing suits -- skintight suits with batwing sleeves and a flap between their l...

Egypt sentences deposed President Morsi to death

An Egyptian court sentenced deposed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi and more than 100 other defendants to death on Saturday over jail breaks during the 2011 uprising. Morsi, sitting in a caged dock, raised his fists in defiance when the judge read his verdict. Many of those sentenced were tried in absentia, including prominent Islamic cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi, who resides in Qatar. Under Egyptian law, death sentences are passed on to the mufti, the government's interpreter of Islamic law, who plays an advisory role. The court will pronounce its final decision on June 2. Morsi was spared the death sentence in the first of two trials that concluded on Thursday, in which the court advised death sentences for 16 defendants on espionage charges. They had been charged with colluding with foreign powers, the Palestinian Hamas and Iran to destabilise Egypt. The court will pronounce the verdicts for Morsi and the remaining 18 defendants in that trial at a later date. The court the...

US special forces kill Isis commander and capture wife in Syria raid

US special operations forces have killed an Islamic State commander through a dramatic and secretive raid into Syria and have taken a woman prisoner, the first US-held detainee of the war against Isis and a move that places immediate stress on one of Barack Obama’s signature wartime policies. Ashton Carter, the US defense secretary, confirmed on Saturday that Obama ordered the elite troops to raid a location in eastern Syria and “capture” an Isis figure, Abu Sayyaf. Unusually, Carter said the raid also targeted the man’s wife, identified as Umm Sayyaf. Abu Sayyaf was killed in the raid, Carter said. Umm Sayyaf was taken prisoner – a rarity for the Obama administration, whose reluctance to add to the complexities of US wartime detentions has often led it to kill battlefield targets instead of capturing them. A White House statement indicated the Iraqi government “contributed” to the operation, involvement that could signal Umm Sayyaf’s ultimate dispensation. Bernadette Meehan, the ...

Big Brother 2015: Jack McDermott turns down £27000 car in favour of remaining in house in latest Timebomb twist

Big Brother fans were treated to a live twist on Friday night following the public vote for their 'winner' at this stage of the show. Emma Willis announced a shocked Jack, affectionately known as Pie Face, as the viewers' favourite. But his popularity came at a price; Big Brother offered him a new £27,000 BMW, but if he took it, he'd have to leave the show immediately and the £150,000 prize fund would be slashed to zero. Faced with that scenario, Jack turned down the car. But he appeared to bitterly regret his decision later on. Housemates weren't off the hook as Nick then had to nominate two contestants for eviction live on TV and to their face. Shaking and trembling, Nick eventually selected pastor's daughter Adjoa and Sarah. The rest of the housemates will nominate privately in the Diary Room. Who will face the first eviction?

Vatican causes stir with treaty recognizing Palestine as a state

JERUSALEM — The Vatican announced a treaty Wednesday that reaffirms Palestinian statehood, a step that immediately drew Israeli criticism and stirred alarm that an activist Pope Francis was advancing the Palestinian cause at Israel’s expense. The agreement, being finalized in Rome by a group called the Bilateral Commission of the Holy See and the State of Palestine, “deals with essential aspects of the life and activity of the Catholic Church in Palestine,” according to a joint statement posted on the Vatican’s Web site. Palestinians said the accord addresses such matters as properties, taxes and protocol at holy sites. Social media and news reports — as well as some pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian voices — seized on the treaty to suggest that the Vatican had newly recognized the “State of Palestine,” although the Vatican had done so shortly after the United Nations granted Palestine “non-member observer status” in 2012. News of the pending agreement triggered conflicting statement...

The Amtrak train, headed to New York City, derailed and crashed in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, killing at least six people and injuring dozens of others. ‘Girls raped, boys abducted, towns torched’ as South Sudan battle rages

Gunmen in South Sudan have raped girls, seized boys to become soldiers and torched towns in some of the heaviest fighting seen in the 17-month-long civil war, the United Nations said Tuesday. Over 300,000 civilians have been left without “life-saving aid” in the northern battleground state of Unity, after the UN and aid agencies pulled out due to a surge in fighting, with over 100,000 forced to flee their homes. The UN peacekeeping mission said it was “increasingly concerned” about reports from Guit and Koch counties in Unity state of “towns and villages being burned, killings, abductions of males as young as 10 years of age, rape and abduction of girls and women, and the forced displacement of civilians.” The violence is some of the worst in months, as government forces push south from the state capital Bentiu into an opposition zone around the town of Leer, home to some of the country’s once lucrative oil fields. Buhari Set to Introduce Dress Code for Journalists Covering Aso Rock - NigerianTimes

NNPC May Swallow Buhari If…Ex TUC Leader

Former president of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Peter Esele Monday said that the National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) which is largely seen as corrupt by most Nigerians will prove a tough nut to crack for General Muhammadu Buhari if he does not already have a properly worked out plan to manage the excesses of the organization. Esele also predicted a hard time overall for the country in 2015 because of the ailing economy and poor oil prices. With such a tough environment, Esele noted that the new administration would have a tough time this year. On the current fuel scarcity, Esele said that the marketers wanted their money from the government because they were not confident of getting the amount they were owed from the incoming administration. According to him, without a strong resolve, the NNPC would absorb him (Buhari) into the same system that Nigerians have been crying against. Esele however, noted that being seen as uncorrupt could work well for the administration if Buh...

What will the new Tory government do?

Even before the final results of the general election were announced, David Cameron made clear his first priorities of a majority Conservative government: an effort to reinforce the union, immediate work to draft the EU in/out referendum bill and getting the “rollercoaster” £30bn cuts programme under way to tackle the deficit. Scotland bill The pledge to introduce a Scotland bill in the Queen’s speech on 27 May does not appear in Cameron’s key Sunday Telegraph article outlining his priorities for the next 100 days but it does appear in the Conservative manifesto. That Scotland bill will “honour in full our commitments to Scotland to devolve extensive new powers” including giving the Scottish parliament the right to set its own levels of income tax. But that will be coupled with new legislation giving English MPs a veto over matters that only affect England, including the introduction of an England-only income tax by next March’s budget in 2016, on which the new SNP MPs will be bar...

South African man raped at gun point by 3 women so they could steal his sperm

A South African man has told how he was kidnapped and raped by three women in Cape Town. The 33 year old man, whose identity is being kept away from the media, said the women had stopped him in their car to ask for directions and as he was talking to them, one of the women brought out a gun, and forced him into the back of their black BMW and drove away. He said they drove him to an unknown place far from where they kidnapped him, then they began touching him to get aroused. When he didn't, because the only thing he said he felt then was fear, the women forced him to drink an 'unknown substance' from a bottle to make him hard. He said all three women then took turns on him and when he came, they took his semen in plastic bags, placing them in a cooler box. When they were done with him, they kicked him out of the car around Kwazakhele township, Port Elizabeth, and made off with his sperm. The man reported the incident to the police who are now investigating. A South Afri...
