Tree Kills 31, Injures 16 In Imo State

A tragic incident has claimed the lives of 31 persons and left 16 others seriously injured when a tree at the Ukwu-Uko evening market, Umuejinwaoke Umudagu village of Mbieri, Mbaitolu Local Government Area, Imo state, fell on them.

We gathered that the very old tree, which also destroyed the village hall fell, following a strong rainstorm on
Thursday at about 8pm.

According to a resident of the community, Mr Nnaemeka Emenyonu, said “The big tree fell suddenly on 31 people, killing all of them, and leaving 16 others with various degrees of injuries. Those injured have been taken to the hospital already.

“The victims include, two sisters who sell tomatoes. Honestly, this is the saddest event in the history of our community.”

Lamenting on the unfortunate incident, the traditional ruler of the community, Eze Godwin Duru, said such incident had never occurred in the community.

“I do not know what to say. God, what can we call this?, My people were destroyed within a twinkle of an eye. what a pity,” he said.

However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Joy Elemoko, declined comment on the incident after several efforts to get the command’s reaction on the issue.
